Hugh Royer, III’S Champions Golf Academy offers “GAP-YEAR” program to college-age golfers

N. MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — To play at the collegiate level, graduating high-school golfers face more intense competition than ever before.  That is why a “gap-year” program has become an increasingly popular alternative to “red-shirting” their freshman year.  By taking an extra year of training and development without losing a year of college eligibility, participants in the Gap-Year Program at the Myrtle Beach area’s newest and most state-of-the-art instructional facility – the Champions Golf Academy – build better opportunities to reach this objective, and beyond.
After successful high school, college, and amateur careers propelled him to 14 years as a professional – including three years on the PGA Tour, four wins on the Nationwide Tour, and one victory on the South African Tour, Director of Instruction Hugh Royer, III sought to create a facility and training program that provides every resource for players to reach maximum potential in minimal time.  This comprehensive experience, along with Royer’s connections with college coaches, makes his Gap-Year Program stand out among the rest.
“While most golf academies cater to a specific age group, I want to maintain my relationship with my students throughout their career – not just for a short amount of time,” Royer explains.  “I want to be with them every step of the way, and help them make important decisions based on my experiences as a player.  That’s why I’ve developed specialized programs for specific levels of players.”
The Academy helps with college placement and tournament scheduling to ensure the player’s resume is attractive to college coaches.  In addition to the on-course instructional aspect of the nine-month residential program, the mental and physical aspects of the game are integral components to the training process.  Unlike most golf academy fitness facilities, Champions offers golf-specific equipment onsite that allows instructors to continue technical instruction in the gym.  Stephen A. Russo, Ph.D., helps players mentally prepare for competition, manage emotions, and avoid golf burnout.  The end game? Better scholarship opportunities and the confidence necessary to play on any competitive level.
