Have you felt the recent chill in the air? It means that winter is soon approaching and the warmth of the summer will have to wait until next season. Just because summer is going into hibernation, it does not mean that your golf game has to. The key to maintaining your golf game throughout the entire year is proper conditioning.
Routine fitness will help keep your body in shape during the less than desirable weather that often accompanies the winter season. I’m not just talking about lifting weights and running on the treadmill. Don’t get me wrong. These forms of exercise are important. However, it is usually flexibility, not strength, that is the first to go when the cold sets in. If it takes you several holes to “get loose” or “warm up,” your score is going to suffer.
To help overcome your muscle stiffness, try incorporating more stretching into your exercise routine. Proper stretching before and after your round or practice session is a must. For a list of golf-specific stretches, try doing a search on the internet or in the nearest book store. There you will find many published works on golf fitness and stretching routines.
For those that are looking to build strength and flexibility simultaneously, YOGA is the way to go. Because you must hold various poses for 30-60 seconds at a time, yoga is extremely effective in elongating and strengthening your muscles while increasing flexibility in your joints. Doing a half hour to an hour of yoga daily will significantly reduce your recovery time between workouts and keep you feeling loose when you step up to the first tee.
